User Experience (UX) Design II
After a few years of some self-taught UX and trying to understand the concepts on my own, I enrolled in the University of California – San Diego Extension for User Experience Design. This course was one of the requirements to earn the certificate and was probably the most comprehensive class in the list of required classes.
One of the most robust and intense courses required for the UCSD-Extension UX/UI certificate was User Experience (UX) Design II. This continued the study of best practices in web design or interactive design with utilizing UX Laws and patterns.
I took this course during the Fall of 2023. During the course, I created a project brief, branding, design style guide, wireframes, and a prototype of an ecommerce website.
02 / DESIGN PROPOSAL
How it Went & the Design Brief
My first project for this course was to design and develop a design brief and proposal. This would outline and destinguish what would be required in creating a online experience and website along with establishing design goals and a timeline of production.
The design brief also allowed me to define and focus on exactly what I wanted to achieve before any work started on the project. It was created as if I was seeking to approach a company with an entire design package where the goals could feasibly be accomplished through an updated logo and website.
Questions that could be answered in this design brief/proposal
What does Tell Tale Hearth do?
• What does Tell Tale Hearth do and what is it’s history?
What are the goals of Tell Tale Hearth? Why?
• What is the overall goal of the new design project?
• What are you trying to communicate and why?
• Are you trying to sell more products or get awareness of your website?
• How do they differ from their competitors?
• What are the target market’s demographics & psychographics? ie. the age, gender, income, tastes, views, attitudes, employment, geography, lifestyle of those you want to reach.
• What copy needs to be included in the design? Who is providing the copy?
• What pictures/photographs/diagrams etc. need to be used? Who is providing these?
What are the specifications?
• What size is the design going to be?
• Where is it going to be printed/used? The web, business cards, stationery, on your car?
• What other information should you know in regards to specifications?
Is there a required benchmark?
• What do you consider to be effective or relevant design even if it is from your main competitors?
• What are some things not to do, and styles that you do not like or wish to see in your design?
What Is Your Budget for this project?
Note, providing a budget prevents wasting valuable time and resources when trying to maximize your budget.
What is the deadline?
• Give a detailed schedule of the project and set a realistic deadline for the completion of the work.
03 / LOGO DESIGN & STYLE GUIDE
Creating the Logo and Style Guide for Tell Tale Hearth
One of the larger projects for this course was to create a brand and style guide for a cohesive design experience. Once created, it is also easily implemented in the resulting design specifications and it can also make the work easier to create if there is an established brand and style guide to follow.
The following is an excerpt from the established Brand and Style Guide:
Tell-Tale Hearth is a brick and mortar store that specializes in providing Dark Victorian, Medieval, Halloween, and Gothic decor for the discerning customer. Products of this variety, style, and interest are available in this spooky/dark style year round with special focus on the high holidays during the year. We are now exploring and expanding our brand into the digital space and by doing so, we are also providing this guide to ensure brand cohesiveness through digital media and print. This guide is also a source of truth for our vendors and online partners.
We’ve created this guide to help you use some of our core brand assets and elements—our logo, brand colors, typography and how to use these assets and elements with photography. The purpose and goal of this brand and style guide is to ensure the logo, colors, typefaces, and photography are used together in a cohesive and informative manner. This guide is a set of rules to follow when using our brand assets and developing websites, print work, and other materials to promote the brand.
Using the Brand Guide and Color Palettes
Our new brand color palette uses a wide array of different and rich colors designed to be whimsical, vintage, comfortable, cozy, and distinctive. Each color can be used either by itself or in a combination.
Different combinations or single use of the colors can dramatically change the tone and feel of the design created. We love this type of design exploration and want to encourage your creativity with our brand! It also can vastly change the appearance of your creation, so it is also very important to consider how they will work together. Keep in mind that certain color combinations of our brand colors can vibrate if used together and cause the viewer some discomfort, please refrain from using our colors in this way.
To ensure our brand is visible and recognized, it is very important that our color palette is applied consistently and appropriately.
The Use of Typography and Photography
Our preferred typography includes the use of a specific heading typeface (Zilla Slab) and a primary body typeface (Helvetica Neue for print, Nimbus Sans online.) Both of these were selected because of the following factors. Zilla Slab is a free Google typeface available in a variety of font weights and Helvetica Neue/Nimbus Sans is our primary body typeface(s). They are typeface(s) available in a variety of font weights.
Our preferred photography is muted, cozy, and utilizes soft filtering (bokeh) when possible. We do allow some photography that does not emphasize dark or muted tones however. We also encourage some of our photography to show how the products we sell can be used in a bright setting. We like to show how to use the decor available in our shop(s) in a real world setting and pin-point this in our “shop the look” available on our website and at the brick and mortar store.
Our photo style does evolve with current photographic trends, which includes details such as lighting, shadow, angle, and composition all while creating a brand-consistent and cohesive look.
The goal of our photography is for every photo is identifiable as Tell-Tale Hearth. Product and Shop the Look photography stories are clearly about the products we sell. We do not typically use people in our product focused photography, unless it is to show wearables or if the photo requires an in-action viewpoint.
04 / WIREFRAMES
Development of the Website Wireframes & and Challenges Encountered
Creation of Wireframes After the Brand was Established!
Once the brand was established and design decisions were made, wireframes of the website were created and feedback was requested from the professor.
The purpose of creating the wireframes was to better understand the user journey and what they may encounter while navigating the website. Building out each page and applying the basic layout while using the brand and style guide as a baseline, the website came together quickly and easily.
Laying out the use case scenario within the website (and branching out slightly from that,) helped make the project feel more well thought out.
05 / PROTOTYPE
Prototyping the Interactions
After creating the wireframes and applying some minor feedback and changes, a prototype was created in Adobe XD. This prototype included a well thought out layout, a navigation and sub menu, and a walkthrough of the purchase process. Minor layout changes to the navigation were included at this stage while in production.
Shown here is just a snapshot of what is possible with this website and it’s behavior.
The option to preview the interactivity and share it online proved to be incredibly helpful in seeing what worked and what didn’t work.
07 / PROTOTYPE USER SURVEY
Conducting a User Survey on the Prototype
After creation of the prototype, I conducted a usability and user study on the website. The primary goals of this user test was to understand how our customers interact with our website and how they went through the checkout process. More specifically, how they feel about the website flow, brand cohesiveness, and overall consistency of the Tell-Tale Hearth website prototype.
Secondary goals of this user testing included whether the website prototype behaved in a similar manner to other e-commerce websites and how it measured up to these other sites.
Some highlights from this survey included some users wishing the website was real because they lamented that this sort of decor was difficult to find at different times of the year.
08 / CONDUCTING A USER SURVEY
Plan Methodology
Research Scope & Focus Areas:
For this study, I conducted a 30-45 minute test to evaluate the user experience of the Tell Tale Hearth website. This included a couple questions with interaction, navigating within the website, pain points, reasons for use, and competitive analysis.
Study Methods:
Timed online tasks and survey.
Plan Participant Profiles:
Participant profiles included the following relevant information with the following factors:
• Online shoppers who frequently visit sites like Amazon.com, Target.com, and SpiritHalloween.com.
• Users who visit brick-and-mortar stores like Michaels Crafts, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, and Target.
• Age and Demographics – Adults from 20 – 50 years old, shoppers who look for home decor online or in person, folks who enjoy the Halloween holidays.
• Reasons behind using the website – Restrict test participants to people wanting to purchase home decor online. Those who like to shop online and would enjoy a niche type of decor.
• Recruitment – I recruited participants through Facebook groups, friends and family, and company slack channels. Each participant is offered a $5 Starbucks Gift Card for their time and attention.
Plan Test/Task Scenario:
Participants will be asked to imagine the following while taking the test/survey: You’re looking for an easy way to shop for Halloween decor that is available all year round. You are also looking for this type of decor but don’t necessarily want the poor quality that tends to be available from stores like Spirit Halloween. You want the quality to be closer to Target and Pottery Barn but have an easy and quick way to find what you want.
Test Tasks:
Tasks will measure how well new users navigate and interact within the website. This will include the following:
1. Initial Takeaways: Looking at the website, finding the navigation and search, finding interesting products.
2. Shopping the Products: Shopping for a specific product and making a purchase.
3. Adding Products to the Cart: Following up with selecting an item and adding it to the cart by looking at the shopping cart.
4. Checking Out: Finalizing the purchase and returning to the home page.
5. Final takeaways and thoughts on the website’s interaction.
Equipment:
Users will be asked to use their own equipment including an internet accessible desktop or laptop computer to take notes/take the test. They will be asked to view the prototype website via an Adobe XD link.
Budget:
This user study will cost approximately $100-$150. (This is how much it will cost to purchase and send the Starbucks Gift Cards to participants at the end of the study.)
09 / DECIDE FRAMEWORK REPORT
Reporting the Findings of the Usability/User Study
After creation of the prototype and the usability/user study was conducted and completed, a DECIDE report was created which distilled the data into easily readable information and graphs.

This report outlined reasonings and gave a concise visual representation of the steps taken to create the website wireframes and prototype.

Compiling All the Data in a Final UX Report
After creation of the prototype and DECIDE report that detailed the results of the Usability/User Study, a final report was created that outlined and compiled all the reports, project brief, usability survey information and data in one.

What Was Learned
Looking Back, the was a Incredibly Intense Course
From the creation of the idea to the creation of the final UX report and everything in between, this course was the most comprehensive UX/UI style class out of all the classes taken for this certificate. It was a lot of work, but the end result of working through all the steps was incredible. I am very proud of what I created for this course and I look at it as the piece that could be a baseline in how a redesign campaign could feasibly happen.
